The ATM looks like a simple money dispenser, but it&#8217;s actually a small computer connected to your bank \u2014 and every withdrawal is a tiny network conversation happening in real time.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Step by step: what actually happens<\/h2><ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>1. Identify.<\/strong> The card tells the machine who you are \u2014 your account number, in a secure form.<\/li><li><strong>2. Verify.<\/strong> Your PIN proves it&#8217;s really you. The PIN is never stored on the card; it&#8217;s checked against your bank&#8217;s records.<\/li><li><strong>3. Ask.<\/strong> The ATM sends a message to your bank: &#8216;Can this account withdraw $50?&#8217;<\/li><li><strong>4.
