That old saying has never been more useful, because scammers now live in the same places you do: messages, games, social media, and email. The good news? Scams have a shape, and once you know the shape, you can spot it from across the room.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The anatomy of a scam<\/h2><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Almost every scam follows the same skeleton:<\/p><ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>An offer that excites you<\/strong> \u2014 free money, a prize, a bargain that can&#8217;t be real.<\/li><li><strong>Urgency<\/strong> \u2014 &#8216;act now&#8217;, &#8216;limited time&#8217;, &#8216;before it&#8217;s gone&#8217;. Scammers rush you so you don&#8217;t think.<\/li><li><strong>Secrecy<\/strong> \u2014 &#8216;don&#8217;t tell anyone&#8217;, &#8216;keep this between us&#8217;. Real offers don&#8217;t need secrecy.<\/li><li><strong>Payment pressure<\/strong> \u2014 gift cards, wire transfers, or crypto, which are almost impossible to get back.<\/li><\/ul><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Common scams to know<\/h2><ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Phishing<\/strong> \u2014 fake messages pretending to be a bank, game, or platform, asking you to &#8216;verify&#8217; or &#8216;log in&#8217;.<\/li><li><strong>Fake prizes<\/strong> \u2014 you&#8217;ve won something you never entered, and you just need to pay a &#8216;fee&#8217; to claim it.<\/li><li><strong>Get-rich-quick<\/strong> \u2014 &#8216;double your money in a day&#8217; schemes and too-good investments.<\/li><li><strong>Fake sellers<\/strong> \u2014 amazing deals on goods that never arrive, or arrive as a cheap copy.<\/li><li><strong>Impersonation<\/strong> \u2014 someone pretending to be a friend or family member in trouble, asking for money fast.<\/li><\/ul><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The red-flag checklist<\/h2><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If any of these show up, stop and slow down: someone you don&#8217;t know asks for money; you&#8217;re told to keep it secret; you must pay by gift card, wire, or crypto; the deal is far better than anywhere else; or the message is full of urgency and pressure.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What to do<\/h2><ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Stop.<\/strong> Don&#8217;t reply, don&#8217;t click, don&#8217;t pay.<\/li><li><strong>Check with a trusted adult.<\/strong> Legit opportunities survive a second opinion; scams don&#8217;t.<\/li><li><strong>Never send gift cards or money<\/strong> to someone you haven&#8217;t verified in person.<\/li><li><strong>Report and block.<\/strong> Real platforms want scam reports, and blocking ends the conversation.<\/li><\/ul><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One extra superpower: kids often spot scams faster than adults.
